Shark Diving Port Lincoln

Sharks love AC/DC

Thursday, 9 June 2011For Those About To Rock

I have had an interesting week! I possibly might have just received my few seconds of fame. Well that’s how It felt when my 7 year old asked if I was now famous and what it was like to be so.

To explain I will back ground for a sec. Our shark tour business is in its infancy and due to over regulation and lack of government decision, we have had to go it alone for three years. I have been waiting for a decision on whether we are going to be able to berley or chum for great white sharks at the Neptune Islands near Port Lincoln in South Australia. This excessive waiting period has become tiresome and I started to explore other methods that might attract the White Sharks for veiwing near the cage.
I stumbled onto some guys in Guadeloupe www.whitesharkdiving.com who have in the past but recently stopped using music for shark attraction. They assure me that it works and they had some success with rock music. Along with this I e-mailed a guy by the name of Eric Stroude of Shark Defence www.sharkdefense.com who was doing some work with shark repelents, to see if in his work he had come across anything that had attracted sharks. He suggested sound devices as well and that there were specific frequency ranges that applied to different sharks.
So I did the only thing that I know how and tried it. I hung a speaker over the side and started alphabetically going through my Aussie rock collection. First cab off the rank, ACDC Back in Black album, all time classic, well loved aussie rockers. Got throught the first few songs not much happened. But we knew there was a shark around as it was at the back of another boat chasing baits. When the ipod got to the song Back in Black the shark left the bait and came over to us and didn’t leave for about twenty minutes. We tried the rest of the album but two songs stood out, Back in Black and Shook Me All Night Long. The shark even came up and rubbed its nose and face along the speacker. I could not beleive it! I had a few mates on board and they were wetting themselves with excitment. We thought it was the coolest thing ever. In true occa scientific form we thought we better try this else where so we went over to the other boat that was also feeding sharks to keep them around, and tried it there. We attracted two sharks there for about the same amount of time.
Well with amo like that you go into buisness don’t you. We start doing trips to the Neptunes to see sharks diving in the cage. We built a ripper cage that can fit four people in, fitted a syncronized swimming speaker in it, and Bobs your Aunty instant shark cage diving. Now we’re no mugs and certainly aren’t trying to rip people off. We know that if you feed wild animals or any animal you will see more of them. So we charge accordingly, we charge for the trip to the island, food and drink, taxes, commisions and parks entry fee. Passengers only pay for sharks when they see them. Can’t be fairer than that. Any way things are going well, we do some dives and listen to some cool tunes out in the water, see lots of sharks and every one is loving it.
This fella from the papper comes out and thinks its a right crack and does an article in the local papper. Well blow me down with a feather the phone the next day goes crazy. Everyone wants to know about how ACDC and sharks work, what do the sharks like, how do they react, are they head banging. Its pretty funny but at the same time it is not. I think that there is research here to be done, but I am not the guy to do it. I will record the day light , cloud, wind, rain, BA pressure, sharks sighted , songs played and reactions but there may be no order. I am going to even set up a play list of all the songs that people have suggested, we are going to call it shark request and see how it goes.
I think that there are to many strickly scientifice operations out there, all serious and all experts on this but we are going to have fun. This will end where it started with a couple of guys that love the ocean, love her suprises and temper, we love showing people our back yard and the secrets that it holds and we love more than anything else the pure joy in your eyes when you see through us what we see every day.
On this blog you will hear from time to time from the captains of the Advcenture Bay Charters Fleet only when they feel like it and only when they have got a story to tell. If you can read a good yearn then we know a place where the romance and power of the sea meets a true paradise on earth.
